June is LGBTQ Pride month which is celebrated annually to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of June 1969. In 1969 patrons of the Stonewall Inn, New York staged an uprising which resisted the harassment and persecution that LGBTQ members were commonly subjected to. Today, PRIDE celebrations happen all over the world from pride parades to parties to concerts and memorials.
The symbolic rainbow flag did not appear until 1978 when it was flown at a Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco. The original flag had 8 colors, hot pink being the 8th color. After demand for the flag increased, they dropped the hot pink color due to the shortage of hot pink fabric.
The pride flag colors all have meaning: Red (Life), Orange (Healing), Yellow (Sunlight), Green (Nature), Turquoise (Magic/Art), Indigo (Serenity), Violet (Spirit)
In 2017, the Philadelphia Office of LGBT Affairs gave the pride flag a little make over when they launched their More Color More Pride campaign. This campaign introduced the Brown and Black stripes to the top of the flag.
Pride month is a great time to introduce your kids to different kinds of families.
