Like many 9-year-olds, my son loves video games. He loves all the classics that his father and I played as kids and all the new games that have come out over the years. Some of the games are great for older kids and younger kids. However, more often I am finding the games he's playing are not considered appropriate for my 4-year-old.
For my 4-year-old, I prefer him playing games that help establish his letters, numbers and shapes. Games where he is doing simple math problems or telling the differences between two images. I have found those games in apps, but then I have to worry about him wanting to play on an expensive tablet and then comes the "too much screen time" issue.
As a parent I feel like I am just going in circles.

When he gets home each day from the daycare, he immediately runs into the living room, grabs his chair, and slides it into the kitchen to start playing. The interactive game options range from letters, numbers, animals and music, all with gaming sound effects. Each one kept him engaged.
The tablet comes off and reveals a tray that doubles to hold snacks, action figures and even small books. My 4-year-old loves that he can hide snacks in the seat! This proves to be very useful when hiding his favorite snacks from his hungry big brother.
